Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) is one of the largest agricultural processors in the world. Archer Daniels processes crops into food ingredients, animal feed ingredients, renewable fuels and natural alternatives to industrial chemicals.
ADM's revenues for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2008 increased 78% to $21.8 billion from $12.2 billion for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2007. Net income for the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2008, increased 10% to $372 million from $339 million in 2007 (excluding gains from asset sales of $616 million after-tax). Revenues for the year ended June 30, 2008 increased 59% to $69.8 billion from $44.0 billion for the year ended June 30, 2007. Net income for the year ended June 30, 2008 was up 16.5% to $1.8 billion from $1.55 billion in 2007 (excluding gains from asset sales of $616 million after-tax).
Archer Daniels, Deere and Monsanto recently announced that they would collaborate on conducting research to find ways to use the residue parts of corn to produce electricity and biofuel.
On August 14, 2008, ADM agreed to purchase Campa Sued GmbH & Co. KG, a Germen company which operates a German rapeseed-crushing plant. The plant is used for production of oil and meal for the food, feed and energy markets. The acquisition of the plant will help strengthen Archer Daniels' operating activities and position in Central and Eastern Europe.

Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM) closed on August 26, 2008 at $25.24, down 48% from its fifty-two week high of $48.95. The Company's stock trades at less then 7 times trailing earnings and yields a 2.0% dividend yield. This may be the time to take a closer look at this solid company which is down significantly from its fifty-two week high and in an industry that should sustain continued demand and growth for some time. The global "food crisis" is not likely to be going away soon and this should benefit agricultural companies such as Archer Daniels Midland.
